What is mastery learning?
This year all of my classes will be graded using mastery learning. Mastery learning is a system that allows students to demonstrate mastery of each learning goals through short assessments called Mastery Checks as well as Unit Exams.
If the student demonstrates that he/she has mastered that learning goal they can move on to an enrichment or application project.
If the student does not demonstrate that he/she has mastered the learning goal they will be given the opportunity to reassess. Before they can do that they will practice more problems, watch a tutorial video or have small group instruction. If they demonstrate mastery on the second Mastery Check that will be the new grade. They will not be "penalized" for the low score they received on the first Mastery Check.

What are Mastery Checks?
Mastery Checks are graded on a 4 point rubric. They typically consist of 3 - 4 questions at Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4. Students must receive above a score of 3 to demonstrate mastery and 4 to exceed mastery. Students who receive lower than a 3 have the option to retake a similar version after additional practice and instruction.
